MAXIMIZE YOUR SAVINGS DURING SEASONAL CHANGES

PIN

When the seasons shift from cold to warm and warm to cold, it’s a great time to save on heating and cooling expenses. With spring and summer temperatures quickly approaching, here are a few tips to save you some money.

  • Turn off that heater and try to put your cooling thermostat a few degrees higher than you normally do and see if you can adjust.  I’m not suggesting you suffer in the heat, but wearing lighter clothing and turning the thermostat up a few degrees may be unnoticeable. Yet, the utility bill will certainly reflect the adjustment.
  • Spring is also a great time to replace air filters, check for leaky doors and windows, and insulate the gaps.
  • Take an inventory of your house for additional minor repairs which can save you money this summer.
  • Turn off lights when not in use; not only do they use electricity, they heat up the house requiring more electricity to cool the space.
  • Unplug appliances and cords when not in use.
  • Keep an eye out for water leaks. If it is necessary to hire a repair person, it needs to be done.
  • And, one more spring tip: as you are looking ahead to summer grilling and swimming watch weekly store ads and plan on using less expensive meats, vegetables and home-made desserts to keep the costs low.

Make a few of these changes and enjoy the warmer weather with some relief to your finances.
